On This Day – 31st May
Alex Ferguson was sacked for the only time in his 39 years of management on this day in 1978.
Ferguson was the manager of St Mirren at the time and was shown the door by St Mirren Chairman Willie Todd. He had already told Todd that he wanted to leave and join Aberdeen and take some of his players with him to Pittodrie.
Ferguson had already turned down the managers job at Aberdeen a year earlier, opting to stay and carry on the fantastic job he had started at Love Street. In the four years Ferguson was in charge of St Mirren, he took the club from the third tier of Scottish football up to the top division.
He went from strength to strength in his managerial career, going from Aberdeen to Manchester United and had a spell as Scotland manager in the mid 80’s.
After his illustrious career, it is almost impossible to think that someone would sack him!
