On This Day – 1st May
Belgium and France played out a 3-3 draw on this day back in 1904. They competed for the Evence Coppee Trophy but as the game finished level, the trophy wasn’t awarded!
The match was France and Belgium’s first competitive matches. It was also the first international match to be played between two independent European countries.
Georges Queritet gave Belgium the lead after 7 minutes. Louis Mesnier equalised for France five minutes later and a minute later Marius Royet gave France the lead.
France held onto the lead until 50 minutes when Queritet levelled the score. Pierre-Joseph Destrebecq then scored to give Belgium the lead until Gaston Cypres scored an equaliser with three minutes of the game remaining.
