Greatest Own Goals of All-Time No.5

Santiago Vergini (far right) smashes in a great own-goal against Southampton

This week’s own goal comes courtesy of Sunderland’s former defender, Santiago Vergini.
The own goal was the first of eight goals conceded by Sunderland against Southampton on 18th October 2014. It is one of the greatest own goals in Premier League history.

The own goal came after 12 minutes after the ball ping-ponged about in Sunderland’s half.
Sunderland defender Patrick van Aanholt hit a poor first-time pass forward to Will Buckley. He should really have taken a touch to get the ball under control and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin beat Buckley to the ball.
Schneiderlin played a quick one-two with Jack Cork but Cork’s return pass was a bit too high, leaving Schneiderlin a tricky ball to chase.

The Frenchman stretched and managed to flick the ball over two defenders but it went too far for him to reach.
Santiago Vergini came rushing in and caught the ball on the half-volley as he got just inside the penalty area. The ball arrowed in to the far corner giving Vito Mannone no chance in the Sunderland goal.

I was travelling back from watching Millwall that day and bumped into a friend of mine who is a Sunderland fan. He had gone to the game and to say that he was annoyed is an understatement!
