Euro 96 Revisited – 18th June
The second fixture in Group A involved Scotland and Switzerland. With all of the world’s attention turned towards events at Wembley, Scotland came away with a 1-0 win over the Swiss.
Ally McCoist’s goal was enough for to give the Scottish team win. It was a bittersweet result though, as Patrick Kluivert’s late goal against England sent the Dutch through on goal difference.
England topped the group with the Dutch qualifying in second spot. Scotland finished in third and the Swiss finished bottom.
France were the winners of Group B after beating Bulgaria 3-1 at St James’ Park. Spain qualified in second spot after beating Romania 2-1.
Both Bulgaria and Romania impressed immensely at USA ’94 two years ago and both sides will be desperately disappointed at their poor performance.
Romania didn’t win a single point at this tournament, finishing rock bottom.
