On This Day – 26th April

Arsenal hold the record for most FA Cup wins, having lifted the famous trophy thirteen times in their 134 year history.
It was on this day back in 1930 that Arsenal won their first FA Cup, courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town at Wembley.

Arsenal’s victorious manager was Herbert Chapman and ironically, he had joined the North London club from Huddersfield Town.
The Cup win was his first trophy for Arsenal. He would go on to win two league titles before his untimely death in 1934.

The 1930 FA Cup Final was famous for the Graf Zeppelin flying over the stadium during the second half. The German airship flew about 200 above Wembley and the game was stopped as everyone looked up to see the awesome sight.
As the famous German airship flew over the stadium, it created a shadow over the whole of the pitch. It dipped its nose in honour to King George VI who was watching the game from the Royal Box.

Alex James, Arsenal’s most well-known player at the time, scored after 16 minutes of the match to give Arsenal the lead.
They hung on until the 88th minute when Jack Lambert scored Arsenal’s second sealed their first Cup win.
