Bobby Charlton scored on his England debut on this day back in 1958.
The goal was scored at Hampden Park in a 4-0 win, the result meant England shared the Home Championship with Ireland.
Bryan Douglas opened the scoring for England after 12 minutes before Derek Kevan added a second on 23 minutes.
Bobby Charlton’s goal on the hour-hour mark was the pick of the bunch. Tom Finney took the ball down the left wing, took the ball past Scotland’s right back Alex Parker and whipped in a cross to the far post.
Charlton was waiting at the far post about ten yards from goal. He hit the ball on the volley, giving Scotland’s goalkeeper Tommy Younger no chance.
Derek Kevan added a fourth for England in the second half to seal the win. Charlton would score two in England’s next game, a 2-1 win over Portugal at Wembley 18 days later. He would end up scoring 49 goals for England in the next 12 years and in doing so, became England’s highest goalscorer.
Charlton proudly held this record for 45 years until Wayne Rooney scored his 50th goal for England in September 2015. Rooney would go on and score a further three goals for England.
