Greatest Own Goals of All-Time No.3
Sandy Brown made 251 appearances for Everton between 1963 and 1971 but will forever be remembered for an own goal that he scored in one particular game.
The own goal came in a 3-0 defeat to arch-rivals Liverpool on 6th December 1969 at Everton’s Goodison Park.
Liverpool were winning 1-0 after 54 minutes courtesy of a goal from Emlyn Hughes. The Reds then came forward, trying to get their second goal of the game.
Liverpool’s Peter Thompson took the ball down the left wing. He took on and beat John Hurst before delivering a into the box.
The ball went over Everton goalkeeper Gordon West and Brown came rushing in at the far post. With a diving header, the defender put the ball into the back of the net.
To compound the misery for the Scot, he was under no pressure at all as no Liverpool player had made a run for the ball. He could have let the ball go over his head as Liverpool’s Bobby Graham (who Thompson originally intended the cross for) was a few yards off the pace and would never have on the end of the cross.
Unfortunately for the Everton left back, the Match of the Day cameras were present at Goodison Park, meaning that the own goal would be in the video archives forever. It is almost 51 years since the own goal and we are still talking about it!
Sandy Brown would have the last laugh though. Everton went on to win the League championship at the end of the season and Brown would get a League winner’s medal.
