On This Day – 8th March
It was on this day back in 1974 that the unthinkable happened – Bobby Moore was transfer-listed at West Ham United.
The World Cup-winning captain had been going through a bit of a dip in form and manager Ron Greenwood decided to put him up for sale.
Second Division Fulham came in and offered £25,000 for Moore’s services. The deal was agreed and Moore moved across the capital to Craven Cottage after 16 years at Upton Park.
Moore is widely regarded as the greatest player to pull on a West Ham shirt and was a real coup for Fulham.
In a twist of fate, Fulham and West Ham were drawn against each other in both domestic cups. Fulham won the League Cup tie but West Ham won the 1975 FA Cup Final against Moore’s new team 2-0.
Moore won 108 caps for England and will go down in English history as one of the best players to play in our domestic league.
