On This Day – 16th March
2,000 people witnessed a moment in history on this day back in 1872. They were at the Kennington Oval to watch the inaugural FA Cup Final.
The two teams playing were Wanderers and Royal Engineers. The Wanderers captain was Charles Alcock, the secretary of the FA.
Alcock was also the inventor of the competition and it was his side who ran out 1-0 winners.
Lieutenant Edmund Creswell of the Royal Engineers broke his collarbone in the first 10 minutes of the game and still carried on playing. Although that shows bravery and courage, I still think that Bert Trautmann playing on with a broken neck in the 1956 Final was more amazing. Sorry Lieutenant!
