Football’s Greatest Goals No.5
This week’s greatest goal comes from one of the greatest players of recent years.
Zinedine Zidane was part of the Real Madrid line-up to face Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002 Champions League Final at Hampden Park in Scotland.
Hampden Park was the setting for one of Real’s most famous matches, as they demolished Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3 in the 1960 European Cup Final.
This time around, the Real Madrid side were known as the Galacticos and had many world-class players. Zinedine Zidane was one of them.
With the score at 1-1 and approaching half-time, Zidane fired in a fantastic volley, regarded as one of the finest goals from a Champions League Final.
Roberto Carlos played a quick give-and-go with Santiago Hernan Solari on the left wing.
Solari took a touch before playing the ball over Leverkusen’s right back and Roberto Carlos chased after the through-ball.
The ball bounced up and the Brazilian hit a hopeful ball up in the air towards his team-mate Zinedine Zidane. Zidane was under the ball, standing just inside the Leverkusen penalty area.
The Frenchman adjusted his body with a swivel of the hips as the ball dropped out of the night sky. He hit the ball hard on the volley and it flew into the top corner of the net. Leverkusen goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt had no chance of getting near the ball.
The fantastic volley turned out to be the winning goal of the game. It also gave Real Madrid the ninth Champions League win of their illustrious history.
