A blog about all things football

On This Day – 4th February

It was on 4th February 2006 when Alan Shearer finally broke the Newcastle United goalscoring record, taking Jackie Milburn’s record that had stood for almost 50 years.

Portsmouth were the visitors at St James’s Park on the night and with the home side leading 1-0, Shearer added the second goal of the game to score his 201st goal for Newcastle. With that goal, he became Newcastle’s highest goalscorer of all-time.

Milburn had a much more successful time at Newcastle than Shearer in terms of winning silverware, having won three FA Cups in five years (1951, 52 and 55). Shearer was more successful on the international stage, scoring 30 goals in 63 games for England.

It was perhaps fitting that the man to take Milburn’s record would be another Local Hero. Shearer retired at the end of the 2005/06 season, having amassed a total of 206 goals for the Toon Army.
