On This Day – 28th February
Sir Alex Ferguson was given the Freedom of the City of Manchester on this day back in 2000.
The award was given to him on the back of him overseeing his Manchester United side’s Treble-winning season in 1998/99. Ferguson had already won many trophies with Manchester United but the Treble win was one that went down in history. No English club had ever won the league, FA Cup and European Cup in the same season before, or since!
Sir Alex wasn’t the first Manchester United manager to be given the Freedom of the City of Manchester. That honour went to Sir Matt Busby back in 1967. A year later his Manchester United side beat Benfica 4-1 after extra time to become European Champions for the first time.
Ferguson stayed on as manager at Old Trafford until retiring in 2013, completing 27 years in charge of the Manchester club and was the club’s most successful manager.
