On This Day – 21st February
It was on this day a quarter of a century ago back in 1995 that Arsenal manager George Graham was sacked as Arsenal manager.
Graham, who was in his ninth season in charge of the club, had taken some illegal bungs when completing the transfers of Pal Lydersen and John Jensen to the club.
It was alleged that the Arsenal boss had pocketed over £400,000 from the two deals+
Graham is Arsenal’s second most successful manager and Arsenal had won 2 league titles as well as 2 League Cups and an FA Cup in his time at the club. He had also masterminded Arsenal’s first European title since 1970, as the club lifted the European Cup Winners Cup the previous May.
Rune Hauge was a Norwegian agent and it was he who gave the money. When the illegal payments came to light, Graham was given the boot by the Arsenal board. Five months later, he was given a one year suspension from the game.
