Good, Bad and Ugly kits from the past – Portsmouth

Paul Merson in the 2002/03 home shirt

Good – home shirt 2002/03
I have chosen this shirt for the ‘Good’ category because it was the home shirt when Portsmouth won the First Division league title.
Pompey Sport designed and manufactured this shirt. It was plain blue with a thick white stripe with a red trim running down the inside of the shirt and sleeve.
The sponsors’ logo in the centre of the shirt looked great as ty’s red heart with white lettering went perfectly with the shirt.

Bad – away shirt 1994/95
This shirt was used as the away shirt in the 1994/95 season. The sponsors changed to ‘Goodmans’ on shirts worn later, replacing ‘The News’ along the front of the shirt.
The ‘Goodmans’ shirt then became the third shirt in the 1995/96 season. ‘Goodmans’ appeared on all goalkeeper’s shirts and the home shirts of the time.
As for the design of the shirt by Asics, the plain white shirt had thin navy blue stripes running vertically down the shirt. There was a wide gap between the stripes.
The area where the buttons were under the collar of the shirt looks quite ugly. Manchester City wore a similar shirt at the time but it was made by Umbro.

Micky Quinn in the 1987/88 shirt

Ugly – home shirt 1987/88
The ugliest shirt in Portsmouth’s history in my opinion.
Admiral manufactured and designed the shirt which was a plain blue with thin red and white pinstripes. It looked more like the design that many non-league teams had for their shirts at the time.
The sponsor ‘South Coast Fiat’ was in a white rectangle and this looked like it had just been stuck on the shirt as a last-minute decision before the match!
