Good, Bad and Ugly kits from the past – Nottingham Forest

Good – home shirt 1979/80
There can be no competition for the ‘Good’ shirt in Forest’s history with the club proudly showing all who saw their shirt that they had won the European Cup in the previous campaign.
‘European Cup Winners 1979’ was embroidered under the clubs crest on the home shirt. The Adidas logo also looked nice on the other side of the chest.
The shirt had a white V-neck collar and cuffs and three white Adidas stripes running down the sleeve.

Neil Webb (former Aldershot Town player!) in the pinstripe shirt

Bad – home shirt 1992 – 94
This was Forest’s first shirt in the Premier League era and is definitely one of their worst home shirts in their history.
Both Shipstones (who sponsored them from 1987) and Canadian lager Labatt’s had their name across the front of the shirt at one point but Umbro’s design remained the same.
I am not a fan of the pinstripe design, it’s just not a great look on a football shirt! It was also the last shirt that Forest wore under Brian Clough’s time at the club.

Stuart Pearce in Forest’s disastrous away shirt from 1995 – 97

Ugly – away shirt 1995 – 97
This shirt was rated as the second worst shirt in Premier League history by readers of the football magazine Four Four Two in 2019.
This didn’t have any bearing on my opinion of the shirt as I didn’t like it when it came out a quarter of a century ago – and still don’t!
The yellow shirt had a crazy navy blue design all over it that must have had Forest fans in a state of shock when it was unveiled as their new away shirt!

Incidentally, the shirt that was rated the worst by the Four Four Two readers was the Chelsea away shirt from 1994 to 1996. I chose it as the Ugly shirt in Chelsea’s ‘Good, Bad and Ugly’, which can be read here.
