On This Day – 11th February
It was on this day in 1998 that Michael Owen won the first of his 89 England caps at the age of only 18 years and 59 days.
Chile were the visitors to Wembley on this cold February night and surprised England by winning 2-0, both goals coming from Marcelo Salas.
Owen made it to the England 1998 World Cup squad but didn’t start in the first two games against Tunisia and Romania but did come on in both games as substitute.
Owen found the back of the net against Romania and hit the post but England lost the 2-1. He started the next game against Colombia and in the Second Round against Argentina where he scored the most famous goal of his career.
Michael Owen’s three most memorable moments in an England shirt would have to be the goal against Argentina that I mentioned above, his hat-trick against Germany in 2001 and his goal against Brazil in the 2002 World Cup Quarter Final.
He had an injury-blighted career and expectations had sky-rocketed after his wonder goal against Argentina. Sadly, he didn’t quite make it but did do well in club football and had a spell playing for Real Madrid.
