On This Day – 9th January
Nine days into the start of the last century, Lazio were formed in Rome. They were formed in 1900 as Lazio Track and Field Club and started to play football a year later.
Lazio remained as the only club in Rome until 1927 when along came their fierce rivals AS Roma. Benito Mussolini tried to merge the two clubs when he was Dictator of Italy. Luckily, this never happened and the Rome Derby (or Derby Capitolino as it is known in Italy) is one of the fiercest in football.
The Lazio fnas would have to wait until 1974 for their first Scudetto (Italian Championship) and their second was won in 2000 under Sven-Goran Eriksson’s reign as manager. Eriksson would leave Lazio in 2001 (also on the 9th January) to become the England manager.
Lazio are currently third in the Serie A table, six points off leaders Internazionale, but they do have a game in hand.
