On This Day – 15th January
On 15th January 1997, Kenny Dalglish replaced Kevin Keegan as manager of Newcastle United.
Twenty years previously, Dalglish had also taken over from Keegan, but that time it was as Liverpool’s number 7 in their playing days. Keegan had gone to Hamburg of Germany and Dalglish came down from Celtic to replace him.
Dalglish had done well as manager at both Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers, but he wasn’t able to replicate his earlier managerial success in his time at the Toon Army. King Kenny was shown the door the following year by the Newcastle board.
