Officially Speaking – with Keith Hackett

A few notes on the midweek action from the Premier League

Manchester United 0 – 2 Burnley
Referee: Jon Moss

The opening goal was scored by Wood from a free-kick taken from the incorrect position. Referee Moss awarded the free-kick inside the Burnley half but it was taken ten yards further forward.
The second goal was a terrific strike by Burnley’s Rodriguez and was the first win for Burnley at Old Trafford in 62 years!

Leicester City 4 – 1 West Ham United
Referee: David Coote

Leicester scored the opening goal through a strike by Jones and the VAR check after was quick and decisive. Leicester’s Vardy went off with an injury and Ricardo scored Leicester’s second.
Referee Coote was in a great position to correctly award a penalty-kick which was again checked by VAR. I don’t know why it was not a serious and obvious error.
David Coote once again covered a dynamic sprint to be in a great position to award a penalty-kick and Leicester scored a fourth goal.
This was David Coote’s best performance in the Premier League and he is establishing himself in the panel.

Tottenham 2 – 1 Norwich City
Referee: Chris Kavanagh

Deli Alli opened the scoring in the 38th minute. We then witnessed a reckless challenge by Norwich’s Cantwell who followed through, putting himself very close to a red card.
Kavanagh was some distance from play but still correctly awarded a penalty kick to Norwich. The game saw Spurs win 2-1

Chelsea  2 – 2 Arsenal
Referee: Stuart Attwell

The major incident was the red card to David Luiz of Arsenal. Chelsea scoring from the resulting penalty.
Chelsea had the ball and then lost in in Arsenal’s penalty area, it was cleared upfield and after a run from Martinelli, he equalised for Arsenal.
Chelsea scored to take a 2-1 lead before Arsenal secured an equaliser with a late strike from Bellerin.

Bournemouth 3 – 1 Brighton and Hove Albion
Referee: Kevin Friend

Bournemouth opened the scoring through Wilson. and then scored a second. Bournemouth’s keeper then made two terrific saves before Wilson scored from a breakaway to give the home side a three – nil lead.
I have to say that Ramsey the home team goalkeeper was brilliant.
Brighton scored with ten minutes left but it was too late and Eddie Howe able to smile after getting a win.

Aston Villa 2 – 1 Watford
Referee: Martin Atkinson

Troy Deeney opened the scoring for Watford and really should have had a second. Mings of Villa was correctly cautioned for a reckless challenge.
Mings should have received a second yellow for a handball that stopped a promising attack. Luiz of Villa then scored an equaliser.
Villa scored the winner in added time. Snatching the victory with Mings who should have been sent off scoring the all-important goal.

Everton 2 – 2 Newcastle United
Referee: Simon Hooper

Referee Hooper made a rare appearance in the middle on Tuesday night.
Everton opened the scoring through Keane before Calvert-Lewin then increased their score to 2-0.
Everton dominated the game with Newcastle suffering because of a long injury list. With a minute of injury time left to go, Newcastle scored to make the score 2-1 and then Newcastle equalised to secure an amazing draw with seconds to go.

Sheffield United 0 – 1 Manchester City
Referee: Lee Mason
Several excellent saves were made by Sheffield United goalkeeper Henderson.
Man City were awarded a penalty kick, but sadly the referee and VAR failed to detect that the goalkeeper had left his line too early to make a save. It really should have been retaken.
The winning goal came from City striker Aguero after a great pass from De Bruyne.

Crystal Palace 0 – 2 Southampton
Referee: Andre Marriner

Redmond of Southampton opened the scoring with a terrific strike.
VAR looked at a possible finger in the eye of an opponent by Zaha of Palace but decided that no offence had been committed.
Early in the second half Armstrong scored a second for the away team to confirm victory for The Saints.
