Good, Bad and Ugly kits from the past – Ipswich Town
Good – home shirt 1984-86
France hosted – and won Euro ’84 in the summer of 1984. As the 1984/85 season started, Ipswich wore a new home shirt with the same design as the all-conquering French side.
The shirt was manufactured by Adidas and had a thick red horizontal strip where the team’s sponsors Pioneer had their name written across the shirt in white letters.
The shirt had three thin white horizontal lines running across it under the thick red stripe. and looked fantastic.
Bad – away shirt 1995/96
Ipswich had just been relegated from the Premiership at the end of the 1994/95 season and Ipswich were about to start life back in the Football League.
Their fans must have thought that things had gone from bad to worse when this was unveiled as their away shirt!
The shirt was predominantly turquoise with a burgundy collar and sleeves with a lime green trim. It looked more like a one-day cricket shirt than a football shirt!
Ugly – away shirt 1996/98
Euro 96 had finished and England had performed well, reaching the semi-final before losing to Germany. Ipswich fans were also keenly anticipating the new away shirt that would be replacing the dire turquoise and burgundy affair that they were subjected to in the previous season.
Imagine their horror when they discover that this shirt will be their new away kit for the next two seasons!
Yellow and black vertical stripes with a red trim that looked more like jacket that Richard Whiteley would wear on Countdown!
