Good, Bad and Ugly kits from the past – Arsenal

This is the first in a new series called ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’. There are no references to Clint Eastwood, contrary to the picture above!

I will post three different kits from a club’s past and post whether I think they were good, bad or ugly. This is of course my opinion, you may disagree with it but it is all just a bit of fun.

The series with the 92 Football League clubs (in alphabetical order), then some international kits and finally some kits from some of the major European clubs.

Today’s featured team is Arsenal…

Thierry Henry in the 2005/06 redcurrant commemorative shirt

The Good – 2005/06 Home shirt
This shirt was brought out for Arsenal’s last season at Highbury in the 2005/06 season. It was redcurrant in colour instead of the traditional red and white because Arsenal wore redcurrant shirts when they first moved to Highbury 93 years earlier.
The sponsors and player’s name and number were printed in gold on the shirt and ‘Highbury 1913 – 2006’ was stitched around the Arsenal crest and at the bottom of the back of the shirt. It oozed class and was a real fans-favourite.

Cesc Fabregas in the third kit from 2006-2008

The Bad – 2006 – 2008 Third shirt
Arsenal brought out a white away shirt in 2007, much to the anger of many fans who said that Arsenal should never wear the same colour as fierce North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The white shirt wasn’t nearly as bad as the third shirt brought out at the time, made up of redcurrant and dark blue vertical stripes.

Nigel Winterburn in the famous ‘bruised banana’ shirt of 1991-93

The Ugly – Away shirt 1991-93
The ‘bruised banana’ shirt was worn for two seasons (91/92 and 92/93) and has been rated by many football fans as one of the worst football shirts of all-time.
This might be a bit drastic and the shirt has recently had a bit of a revival with retro shirts becoming fashionable. Arsenal have even started bringing out scarves and hats with the ‘bruised banana’ pattern on and this season’s away shirt has a similar design as a nod to this shirt from the early ’90s!
