Good, Bad and Ugly kits from the past – Cambridge United

John Turner in Cambridge’s home shirt 1991/92

Good – home shirt 1991-1993
This plan amber shirt with a horizontal chevron pattern and a black collar was worn during one of Cambridge United’s most successful periods in their history.
In the 1991/92 season (the first season that they wore this shirt) they reached the play offs at the end of their first season in the Second Division.
This was all the more impressive as they had won back-to-back promotions to get there. Sadly they lost 6-1 on aggregate to Leicester City in the semi-finals.
Their football may have been dull but the home shirt was certainly classy!

The 93/94 shirt did not have a nice design in my opinion

Bad – home shirt 1993-95
Vandanel manufactured this shirt and I deliberated for a while over whether this should be in the bad or ugly section.
My only reason for not putting this in the Ugly section is that United wore this in the 93/94 season and I played as Cambridge United in one particularly memorable version of Championship Manager ’94.
I can’t understand how the designers thought that they could get away with three different stripe patterns on the shirt, it looks so slapdash and not thought through. The grandad-style collar just looks awful too.

This season’s away shirt

Ugly – away shirt 2019/20
This shirt really isn’t nice. I think that the designers should have stuck with either a white shirt or a sky blue shirt. Instead the shirt looks like when you try different colours of paint on a wall to see which one looks good.
