Boxing Day 1963
There was a festive feast of goals in the First Division on Boxing Day 1963. 66 goals hit the back of the net across the 10 different games with 11 goals at Craven Cottage, 10 of them for the home team Fulham.
Only 2 of the 20 teams playing didn’t score, Everton and Bolton Wanderers. They lost 2-0 to Leicester and 3-0 to Sheffield Wednesday.
As mentioned earlier, Fulham scored ten, Blackburn hit eight at away to West Ham, Burnley and Liverpool scored six and Chelsea scored five at Blackpool.
There were also a few high-scoring draws, West Brom and Tottenham drew 4-4 and Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United, Wolves and Aston Villa drew 3-3.
This really was a different era of football and it is highly unlikely that we will ever see that many goals shared out across the top-flight teams in one day again.
There was no television coverage of any of the games either as Match of the Day would be coming in the following year.
