Matchday blog – Aldershot Town vs Maidenhead United 02/11/19
My view from the North Stand in the first half |
Match number 468: Aldershot Town vs Maidenhead United
Saturday 2nd November 2019
With this being the last home game before Remembrance Day, the club commemorated the fallen soldiers of times gone by.
Aldershot is steeped in military history as it used to be an army town and so every Remembrance weekend game is always impeccably and tastefully done.
Before kick off today, we all paused for a two minute’s silence which was impeccably observed with a D-Day veteran standing holding the matchball in the centre circle.
The two-minute sience before the game |
The game started on a wet and slippery pitch and in all honesty the football on display was poor. It made for frustrating viewing for us Aldershot fans with Maidenhead extremely difficult to break down.
My mate and I decided to take a stroll around to the South Stand midway through the first half for a different view. At half time I bumped into our former manager Terry Brown and wished him well before he headed off to his seat.
When I went back to my seat, I was shocked to see Terry was sitting in the seat next to mine! He did a fantastic job when he was manager at Aldershot but it’s been 12 years since he was sat in the home dugout at the EBB Stadium.
I struck up a conversation and from there we talked constantly about football for the whole of the second half. He offered an interview for this blog which was a fantastic bonus and that will appear on here in the coming weeks.
Terry referred to Aldershot as “we” and “us” and jumped out of his seat when we scored. I’d almost forgotten about the game was going on in front of me as I was so happy to be talking to my favourite Aldershot manager of all-time!
The Shots eventually managed to break Maidenhead down and scored just after an hour through Harry Panayiotou. Despite Maidenhead coming back and nearly equalising, Aldershot then secured the three points with a second goal in injury time courtesy of Alfie Whittingham.
The win was amazingly our first win at home on a Saturday for a whole year and took Aldershot up to 19th position with 22 points. Maidenhead are now in 16th position with 25 points from 20 games.
