A blog about all things football

On This Day – 7th November

Tony Adcock, Paul Stewart and David White with the match ball

It was on this day back in 1987 that Manchester City famously hit ten goals past Huddersfield Town in a Second Division match.
Tony Adcock, Paul Stewart and David White all bagged hat tricks, with Neil McNab netting the other in the comprehensive win at City’s Maine Road. It remains their biggest League win to date.

In the away dugout that day sat Malcolm MacDonald, who had only been in charge at Huddersfield for a matter of weeks. ‘Supermac’ could only watch on in frustration as his team let in goal after goal. He would leave the club at the end of the season as they were relegated. This was his last foray into football management.

Manchester City would finish the season in 9th position in the Second Division and had a great run in both cup competitions, reaching the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup and League Cup.
